Our unique social ballroom dance class utilises the practice of social dancing to bring out the best in your home school kids. It is a dance class to develop social skills in children. This class leaves out the ballgowns, tuxedos, shoes, make-up. There is zero pressure to compete, perform or win. It is a social class aimed at instilling personal skills and confidence whilst building social awareness and self-esteem. Find out more about the benefits of Social Ballroom Dance.

As opposed to individual dance styles, the ability to dance with a partner introduces children to a whole new set of invaluable skills. Taking this one step further, we have developed a program that focuses on gently instilling skills and values that benefit the body, heart, and soul in the following ways:

  • Body – fitness, concentration, dexterity, strength, endurance, posture and grace.
  • Heart – co-operation, manners, communication skills, respect, honour, acceptance.
  • Soul – self-confidence, self-respect, self-esteem, perseverance, diligence, modesty.

Developed specifically for Home School kids and parents we understand the need for sibling friendly activities, for boys and girls of all ages to participate at the one time. This class caters to all school-aged children from 5 years to 18 years of age.

Dance Development Structure

Each week builds upon the next, reinforcing what was previously learned through practice and repetition. Students participate in a short, pre-dance discussion, using their workbook as a guideline. During the week, in their own time, students are encouraged to be aware of particular social traits and complete their workbook questions. Whilst this is not compulsory, it is highly encouraged to gain maximum benefits from the program. The workbook is a way to open parental conversations, whilst away from the dance studio. Through the combination of the dance, the workbook and discussions, the program can’t help but to develop social skills your home school kids.

This Class is for all Home School kids who……..

  • are looking for a fun activity to try
  • are looking for opportunities to meet other home educated children;
  • are looking to create friendships;
  • are looking for opportunities to learn, develop and practice social skills in a nurturing environment.

This program is for parents who:

  • are looking at making connections into the Home Education community;
  • are looking to make friendships with other like-minded parents;
  • are looking for a good excuse to have a coffee and chat while their children are supervised.

Our Instructors

It is at Mark Wilson Dance Centre (MWDC) where I have found the perfect fit of instructors who understand the needs of the home school family. With three home school students in competitive Dancesport, Mark and Annemarie Wilson nurture and encourage our children to be the best they can be.

Mark and Annemarie Wilson

Mark’s and Annemarie’s competitive dance career spanned over 7 years. From there they opened their Dance Centre which is founded on family values. For the last 28 years, Mark and Annmarie have produced champion dancers alongside many social dancers. Their passion for providing every student with the opportunity to participate in and receive the benefits of dance is evident in all their classes.

Katie-Marie Bray

Katie-Marie is a Professional Dancer who has been dancing since the age of 3. She specialises in the styles of Ballroom, Latin, and New Vogue. Before re-joining the team here at Mark Wilson’s Dance Centre, Katie represented Australia in the Amateur and Professional fields in Ballroom and Latin in Italy, Germany, Denmark, and New Zealand. During this time Katie continued to grow her skills and experience in her true passion which is the education of young students in the joys of dance.

Katie is the lead specialist at MWDC in educating the young dancers in the latest techniques, musicality and their own personal dance style. Her unique approach to her students focuses not only on their dance but on their personal and professional growth. Katie’s goal is always to have her students, through dance, walk away with a strong sense of self so they can take on the world!

Alex Perilla

Alex was home schooled his entire school life and began his dance career 6 years ago – he has not slowed down since. Having trained with some of the best coaches in Australia, Alex has now settled into Mark Wilson’s dance team. Alex competes in all 3 styles of Ballroom Dancing: Standard, New Vogue, and Latin. He has won the New Zealand National Championships twice and is currently ranked 4th in Australia in his grade for Ballroom, Standard. Alex is still training hard and travels across the country and overseas to compete. He is excited to be sharing his passion of dance with social, recreational, and competitive students.

Testimonials

The homeschool dance class is a lot of fun and it has taught us so many new skills. We have met new people and formed new friendships. The teacher is really nice and the dances have been fun to master.

The decision to change from main stream schooling to home based education in the middle of year 11 was challenging. We were fortunate enough to have found the homeschooling dance classes at the time we were transitioning. At the time my daughter’s anxiety was quite bad, so it took a lot of encouragement to start something else new. She now looks forward to the classes each week as all of the the teachers, parents, and other students have been encouraging and supportive. The classes have also opened up other social outings which have given her the opportunity to have positive interaction with people of all ages.

Ballroom dancing was not my shy daughter’s first choice of dance style. She was very hesitant to start, but within 5 minutes the teacher had her calm and dancing. By the end of the class my daughter was smiling and hooked. Now we looks forward to her dance lessons each week. She loves her dance and I love her new found confidence.
